The pun in the title may be intended.

At Semiahmoo House Society, we appreciate all gifts and we believe that donations are never too small and, in fact, they amount to a lot.

Group HEALTH Global, a company with its corporate head office in White Rock, has an ambassador that helps support our cause. Cheryl Olson-Little, Office Coordinator, organizes fundraisers such as 50/50 draws, flower sales and a penny drive and employees and visitors enthusiastically participate. In 2012, Group HEALTH Global donated $4700 to our organization in this manner and the gifts amount to over $26,000 in total since 2007.

The company supports us in other ways as well. Matt Houghton, President and COO, has volunteered on our board of directors for a number of years and currently serves as Chairman. In addition, the company has demonstrated leadership in creating an inclusive community by hiring Amanda Hart to perform office administration duties (see the article in this issue).

Very quickly when you walk in at GroupHEALTH Global, you realize that the atmosphere in the office has a different feel than a typical financial services provider. Cheryl plays a big part in that. She greets you with such warmth and charisma that you feel comfortable immediately.

Cheryl is also the instigator of fun office days. When Paul Wheeler arrived for the cheque presentation on March 20, he walked into a very colourful office. Cheryl has declared the first day of spring “show your colours day” and employees gladly participate by sporting brightly coloured clothes and accessories. In fact, Paul experienced some unique combinations and had to put on the sun glasses.

Cheryl says, “At times we can have stress in our jobs. We work hard, so it’s important that we have some fun too, after all Laughter is the Best Medicine! The fun days are good for morale and don’t get in the way of getting our jobs done.”

As the name implies, GroupHEALTH Global provides group insurance solutions to businesses, associations and individuals across Canada.

The company takes philanthropy seriously and has partnered with a number of selected causes. Their website confirms this commitment by saying, “We strive to have significant impact on the health and wellness of Canadians and to nurture a strong connection between our employees, our company and the communities in which we live.”[1]

Thank you, GroupHEALTH Global for all you have done for us over the years! Semiahmoo House Society is honoured to be your partner.
