Participants of the recycling program at Semiahmoo House Society are not afraid of getting their hands dirty to help children in developing countries. Tracie Sheppard, Doug Smith, Adam Roche, Gary Middler and Hae Lee, along with program organizers Joan Baldwin and Scott Gueulette gather recyclable containers throughout the community and return them to the recycling depot. This year, the recycling team returned 40,000 containers.

The refunded deposits are pooled and are donated once a year to ChildCare INTERNATIONAL (CCI). CCI is a Christian charitable organization. It is loyal to its mission of breaking the cycle of poverty one child at a time, through resourceful and education-based child sponsorship. The organization reaches to people in need and transforms their lives so that they may achieve their full potential.

This year, program participants and organizers hosted a reception and presented Rod Forrest, Executive Director of CCI, a cheque in the amount of $1500. In turn, they received a photo of the two Haitian girls they sponsor: Gemima and Nadege. Then, Mr. Forrest talked about his travels to developing countries and shared stories of people whose lives were transformed through CCI’s sponsorship. It was rewarding to those involved in the room to hear they were making a difference in people’s lives.

Toward the end, Tracie Sheppard and Lorna Parker, Marketing & Program Development at CCI, cut the cake courtesy of Semiahmoo House Society. The inscription on the cake read: “Semiahmoo House Society is proud to donate $1500 to ChildCare INTERNATIONAL, building better communities one bottle at a time.”

“The community could help us write a bigger cheque next year by donating their refundable recyclables,” says Joan Baldwin. “We pick them up at no cost.”
