The Food For Thought dinner is an annual event hosted by our board of directors and leadership team to connect and innovate with the Society’s ownership. This event is not about speeches and awards delivered by a few people at the podium. On the contrary, it is about eliciting a dialogue and hearing the ideas and thoughts of various segments of the community. To be sure to inspire deep conversations, the event is accompanied with a good measure of ambience, décor, food and wine.
On April 9 this year, we welcomed our major donors and sponsors in a springy décor highlighted with white, green and yellow. It was great to mingle with these generous people, not only to be kind to them for a change, but also to hear what motivates them to support our society. The genesis of their altruism is remarkable and even poetic. This is what we heard:
“Donating to the society gives wings to our dreams and helps us fly.”
“When giving to the society, you can see the difference. SHS is actually doing things to make a difference in the lives of those they support.”
“By giving, we have the ability to advocate for others who are in a similar situation but do not have a voice to be heard.”
“I see that people at SHS give back as well by volunteering at different places as part of their chosen schedule.”
“It’s rewarding to help the ones we care about so that they can reach their potential and goals.”
“I like to see people improve because of the time they share with others.”
“Semiahmoo House makes so many people happy and fulfilled.”
“I want to participate in something meaningful to the people supported by the Society.”
“Contributing to the society is contributing to a new way of thinking. It is evolutionary.”
“Semiahmoo House is different from other societies. It is very positive and forward thinking. It is extremely positive and visible to those supported by the society.”
“I believe that giving back is important. It’s an emotional experience.”
“It feels good.”
That was only part of what we heard. Our dinner guests provided us with excellent feedback on the work we do and about the social climate, giving us much to consider and integrate in our daily operations. On behalf of our board of directors and leadership team, a heartfelt thank you.
