Travel Opportunities
Travel: Opening New Worlds
Travel is a powerful tool that can transform lives. Some people who live in staffed homes (previously called Group Homes)face significant barriers to travel. Whether it’s physical limitations, environmental barriers or financial constraints, these people often miss out on the enriching experiences that travel provides.
Raniel Alberastine, Program, Co-ordinator Inclusive Living Staffed Homes, is passionate about the impact of travel. “After COVID, the people we supported kept telling me that they wanted to travel. They expressed a desire to get away from the group home, whether it was camping, cruising, or visiting Vancouver Island. They emphasized their rights and choices to be happy and travel. They felt burnt out from staying at home and longed to experience nature and different places.
As the program coordinator at 20th, it’s crucial for all staff, including myself, to understand our purpose here. Our primary focus is on the individual lives, hopes, and dreams of the people we support. We prioritize individual choices and dreams. For example, last year, we took people to Agur Lake in Summerland and Vancouver Island, visiting Butchart Gardens and family in Nanaimo. These experiences have a significant impact on people’s dreams and memories. We are here not only for support but creating meaningful memories in their lives.”
